Taos Plaza is the celebrated center of Taos, New Mexico with a history dating back to the late 1700s. Mundus Bishop has developed design guidelines for re-envisioning the plaza, renewing its vitality as the center of community gathering and celebration. Presented in the format of a Cultural Landscape Report, the design recommendations are based upon extensive historical research as well as community input. The guidelines re-establish the historic open lawn with large shade trees enclosed by a low adobe wall. Contemporary needs are addressed by incorporating a central element marking the heart of the Plaza and a new shade structure with room for music and dancing. Guidelines for the surrounding historic district include opportunities for urban infill to repair the town’s dense urban form, and illustrate better pedestrian connections throughout the historic district.
